Puppetry for TV & Web course, Melbourne, Sept-Oct 2011

This news is old. Find out about more recent classes in puppetry here.

I recently wrote that Gary Friedman had moved to Melbourne from Sydney; I have just received news of his first Melbourne-based puppetry course. He has been running similar ones in Sydney for years, and finally us Melbournites have a chance at attending them without leaving the state!

Just wanted to give you a link (courtesy of a web archive site) for the Blue Boy pattern: http://web.archive.org/web/19991006010035/http://members.aol.com/bocashouse/MG/BlueBoy.html Hope that helps!

"And with such an extensive background in the beginnings of modern Australian puppetry, there are few of the ‘older generation’ of puppeteers he’s worked with." Typo? Did you perhaps mean 'Few... he hasn't worked with'? Richard has worked with so many performers over the years. He reinvigorated and reinvented the Australian Marionette Theatre and trained many performers there. He directed the first production of 'Tyrannosaurus sex' for Puppetvision. He continues to offer performance and construction advice to a number of puppeteers, particularly those exploring shadows. And he has an encyclopedic knowledge of world puppetry. Thanks for a neat article.

Whoops - thanks for catching that Philip. Yes, very much a typo, that's what I get for writing at 12am. :) (I've updated the post now) I was tempted to write in about the Tyrannosaurus Sex direction (having seen it myself), but decided against it... I think I would have ended up with a 6 page bio trying to write about every show he's worked on otherwise! ... Also, you're welcome! It's great to learn this stuff, and to continue talking about Australian puppetry. I just came back from a committee meeting for UNIMA Aus. and it's terrifying just how much goes on and so little of it talked about amongst the general public. We really need to be better publicists! Thanks for reading!
