How to make a finger puppet: Ice cream pattern
I made this puppet a few years ago basically for fun: the idea was to make a finger puppet that suited my skill levels as an adult. It’s certainly not your average bear… er, ice cream cone… I took my very basic finger puppet pattern and added quite a few things to come up with the Ice Cream Finger Puppet. With easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions, plenty of pictures, and a set of patterns, you can make this fun puppet for home play or performance. Use the large links below to navigate the different sections.

Free pattern: How to make a finger puppet, Fabric version
Grab the FREE pattern, use the instructions within AND/OR watch the video tutorials belowI took my previously made pattern and reused it for a video tutorial (note, the above download link has instructions for the fabric puppet; the one previously made is the same pattern, just with different instructions on how to use it). The video below shows you how to take the basic finger puppet pattern and with some fleece and cotton fabric or other cloth, you can sew yourself something a bit more stylish. Or you could upgrade the tutorial by adding some extra coolness and make the Ice Cream Finger Puppet pattern.

What materials do you use for finger puppets?
As mentioned in my short post about what materials to use when making a puppet, there’s no hard and fast rules as to what to use when building a puppet. However, there are some materials that are particularly favoured by puppet makers.

@Patt, Glad you like my site, it's always great to hear positive feedback! You may wish to check out my posts on local puppetry companies and those who run puppet courses/workshops.
... School of Puppetry on What types of puppets are there? Both of those have pretty decent lists of people who would be in Melbourne and do workshops/tours. You can also contact UNIMA Australia, www.unima.org.au, the representative organisation for puppeteers in Oz, and ask them to forward your request to their members. I have no doubt you'll find something suitable for your youth group. On a side note, I'm also a graduate of Swinburne, always nice to meet another alumni.
